History of Kedarnath:

Kedarnath and its temple exist from the Mahabharata Era when the Pandavas are supposed to have pleased Lord Shiva by doing penance there.Kedarnath is rebuild by Adi Shankracharya.This temple is build by Pandvas in Treta yug, When Pandvas was last age of their life they come on Kedarnath for sight of Lord Shiva , but Lord Shiva did not want to sight Padavas so Lord Shiva Left Kedarnath, After that pandavas make Five Templae in Kedarkhand , also known as Panch Kedar , Kedarnath is first one of panch kedar. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April end or first week of May) and closes on Bhai Duj (October end or 1st week of November) due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather during winter. Haldwani Cuisine - Baal Mithai

Over the years, the sweet has found home in many Kumaoni stories and folklore, arising from the milieu of Kumaon, as evident from the memoirs of noted Hindi writer, Shivani, wherein she reminiscences, the Almora Bazaar, and the lane filled with smells of locally made sweets, and the shop of Jogalal Shah Halwai, who is said to have invented the sweet, made with milk from near by Phalsima village, and then wrapped in sugar dipped posta or Khas khas (Opium poppy) seeds.Although it is unknown weather its ancirnt. Over the years, rapid commercialization, and costing cutting moves lead to local shopkeeper replacing the original khas khas sugar balls, with plain sugar balls, that look like homeopathic pills. Even a recent version, is completely devoid of sugar balls, to suit changing urban and tourist tastes. After, Joga Shah Halwai, Routela brothers - Khem Singh and Mohan Singh made a name for themselves in sweet preparations.

Baal Mithai is made by cooking khoya (evaporated milk cream) with cane sugar, until it becomes dark brown in color, colloquially called "chocolate" for its color resemblance. This is allowed to settle and cool, and cut into cubes which are then garnished with small white sugar balls.

Baal Mithai as long been a specialty of the Almora district, and neighbouring Kumaon Hills, along with another local delicacy, Singhauri, which is another preparation of flavoured khoya, and comes wrapped in oak leaves.

Today, Baal Mithai, has become a delicacy in many neighbouring hill stations, like Ranikhet and Nainital, where an old Shop, in Bara Bazaar still sells, both the traditional and modern versions of Baal Mithai, the latter being, the same brown fudge without the white sugar balls.

Haldwani today has a mixed local populace. Kumaonis, Garhwalis and people from different parts of the country have settled down in the town to establish businesses, work as traders and service providers in sync with the rapid urbanisation of the town over the past two decades.

Diwali - Deepawali or Diwali, the most pan -Indian of all Hindu festivals, is a festival of lights symbolising the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. Diwali is celebrated 20 days after the festival of Dussehra in the months of October - November.

Dussehra - Dussehra (tenth day) is one of the significant Hindu festivals, celebrated with much joie de vivre in the entire country. The occasion marks the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king, Ravana, Large effigies of Ravana are built and sweets are served.

Holi - The festival of Holi is celebrated on the day after the full moon in early March every year. Originally a festival to celebrate good harvests and fertility of the land, Holi is now known as the 'festival of colours'. Haldwani History

Few historians mention that in 14th century, a local ruler, Gyan Chand of Chand Dynasty, visited Delhi Sultanate and received the regions of Bhabhar- Terai up to the Ganga as a grant from then Sultan. Later, the Mughals tried to take over the hills, but their attempts received set back due to the difficult terrain.

In 1856, Sir Henry Ramsay took over as the Commissioner of Kumaon. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, it was briefly seized by the rebels of Rohilkhand, soon martial law was declared in the region by Sir Henry Ramsay, and by 1858, the region was cleared of the rebels.

Later, Ramsay connected Nainital with Kathgodam by road in 1882. In 1883-84, the railway track was laid between Bareilly and Kathgodam. The first train arrived at Haldwani from Lucknow on April 24, 1884. Later, the railway line was extended to Kathgodam.

In 1901, with a population of 6,624, Haldwani was the headquarters of the Bhabhar region of Nainital District, in the United Province, and it also used to become the winter headquarters of the officers of the Kumaun Division and of Nainital District. The Arya Samaj Bhavan was built in 1901 and Sanatan Dharm Sabha in 1902. The Tehsil office was opened here in 1899, when it became the tehsil headquarters of the Bhabhar, one of four division of Nainital district, and included 4 towns and 511 villages; and had a combined population of 93,445 (1901), spread over 1,279 sq. miles. Though before the formation of Nainital district in 1891, it was part of the Kumaon District, which was later called Almora district.

In 1904, it was consitituted as a 'notified area' and in 1907 Haldwani got the status of town area.

Gora Padao, 4 km south of Haldwani was named after a British camp/post at that location in the mid 1800s, Gora being a slang for the British.

Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Council was established on September 21, 1942. Currently it is the second largest Municipal Council in the state of Uttarakhand after Haridwar.

Uttarakhand opposes eco-sensitive zone

Uttarakhand has opposed the 135-km eco-sensitive zone along the river Bhagirathi from Gangotri to Uttarkashi in the Garhwal region, describing it as an anti-development measure.

During his meeting with the union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh at New Delhi yesterday, Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank asked the centre to reconsider the decision of declaring the region between Gangotri and Uttarkashi as eco-sensitive zone.

Nishank said that Uttarakhand was a small state that had 67 per cent land covered under forests; and because of tough forest laws, the state government was facing problem in carrying out development activities.

He added that such a step is hampering the developmental activities in the state. He said that the Union government should reconsider the matter seriously and also think about the development of the state.

The Chief Minister said that Uttarakhand was the only state in the country that had the responsibility of conservation of 67 per cent forest region. In such a case, the centre should extend help by giving additional grants. Nishank further said that the state government would oppose all such moves which hamper the development of the state. He said that the state government was also sensitive towards environment-conservation and the centre should talk to the state government before taking any such decisions.

Significantly, after declaring the eco-sensitive zone, the centre had also scrapped a series of hydel projects in the region including NTPC’s 600 Mw Loharinag Pala on the recommendations of the state government.

Nishank is also seeking 2000 Mw of free power from the centre in lieu of the scrapped projects.

GVK project: Police launch probe into govt complaint

The Uttarakhand police has launched investigations into a government complaint against some unknown persons who sent a fake fax message that called for resumption of work of GVK’s 330-Mw Srinagar hydel project.

The project, which is scheduled to be commissioned in December this year, had hit a roadblock for the past two years over the issue of submergence of Dhari Devi temple.

An FIR has already been filed in a Dehradun police station after some unknown people used forged signatures of state Power Secretary Umakant Pawar in the fax message that was recently sent to different government departments.

The government had stopped the construction of work of the project around the Dhari Devi temple last year after a prolonged agitation by a section of the Sangh Parivar, including former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti, who are opposed to the shifting of the temple that would be submerged in the dam’s reservoir to be built on the Alaknanda river.

GVK officials claimed construction work other than around the temple was going on without any hindrance. “We are still hopeful of completing the project as per schedule,” said a company official.

Since Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank intends to contest assembly election from Srinagar constituency, the issue had taken political dimensions with the state government setting up inquiry committees over the issue.

The fate of reports of inquiry committees is also not yet known. “The assembly elections are just 10 months away. We don’t think that any decision is possible before that keeping in view the sensitivity of the matter,” said a government official.

GVK was given the task of completion of the Srinagar hydel project by the previous Congress government after the project remained suspended over the past two decades.

Uttarakhand CM announces residential plot for Dhoni, Tendulkar

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Sunday announced to give a residential plot or a house to Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar for winning the World Cup after a gap of 28 years.

The chief minister announced that Dhoni and Tendulkar would be given a residential plot or a house, in the picturesque town of Mussoorie of Uttarakhand, said a government spokesman.

Nishank has also decided to name a sports stadium proposed in Dehradun after Dhoni, he added.

While Tendulkar is a frequent visitor to Mussoorie, Dhoni's ancestral house is in Almora district of Uttarakhand. Dhoni's wife Sakshi also belongs to Dehradun and they tied the nuptial knot last year in the city.

Nishank also congratulated the Indian Cricket team for winning the world cup by defeating Sri Lanka in Mumbai calling up Dhoni to greet him and invited him to visit Uttarakhand.

The CM said the entire Indian Cricket team would be invited for the platinum jubilee celebrations of famous Jim Corbett park, he said.

Uttarakhand government has appointed Dhoni as the wildlife warden of Corbett park as well as brand ambassador for wildlife conservation.

This is an acrobatic dance and is performed by the men folk only. In this dance, a long bamboo pole is fixed at a place. The dancer-acrobat climbs to the top of this pole and then balances himself on his stomach on the top. Under the pole, a band of musicians play the 'Dhol' and 'Damana', while the dancer rotates on the top of the pole, performing other feats with his hands and feet. This dance is popular in the Tehri Garhwal region.

Barada Nati
The Barada Nati folk dance is a popular dance of the Jaunsar Bhawar area of Chakrata Tehsil in Dehradun district. The folk dance is performed on the eve of some religious festivals or on the occasion of some social functions. Both boys and girls take part in the dance dressed in colourful traditional costumes.

Pandav Nritya
The Pandav Nritya, which is related to the story of the Mahabharata, has been very popular, particularly in the Garhwal region. Pandavas Nritya is nothing but a simple narration of the story of the Mahabharata in the form of dance and music. It is mostly enacted on the occasion of 'Dussehra' and Diwali. Pandavas Nritya is popular in Chamoli district and Pauri Garhwal.
