NGO launches portal for blood donor data

CHANDIGARH: In an emergency situation require blood immediately but don’t know where to look for- Your search ends at www.joinuttarakhand.com, a community web portal of people of Uttarakhand, the first of its kind in the region, which was launched in Chandigarh on Sunday by CS Srivastav, Punjab IAS officer. The portal, which has people of Uttarakhand living in diaspora as its main target eyeballs, is a non-profit initiative by Panchkula-based NGO, Arpit.

The site not only provides names of hundreds of blood donors at the click of a mouse but has also a directory containing names and contact details of all the Uttranchalis living in the tricity and their various organizations.

‘The portal is basically an effort to provide an online platform to the people of Uttarakhand living out of the state and to give them a voice,’ said Surendra Halsi, general secretary of the NGO.

Though the site creators plan to target the Uttranchalis living outside the state, Halsi said that he didn’t want the portal to look like as if made exclusively for one community.

‘It’s an inclusive site with no doubt a good focus on Uttranchalis,’ added Halsi.

This is why it seems the portal has separate sections on tourism called ‘Off the beaten track’ for the people who want to make a trip to the ‘unknown and unheard’ places of the state.

A separate section called ‘services’ contains listings on various trades and services like insurance, property, education, astrology, photography, tourism, hotels and restaurants, caterers and jewellery with complete contact details.

‘I think it’s a nice initiative and will definitely help the people of Uttrakhand. Times are changing and we should also change accordingly,’ said Srivastav.
